A video has surfaced of a trio gig I did with Otto Willberg and Tullis Rennie back in May this year. Our performance was part of the Jazz Herstory series, taking place at Poplar Union in East London. Nice to have a document of this group!

Sloth Racket ‘Octopus’ video
We filmed the Sloth Racket gig at The Vortex last week, and I’ll be posting some videos from it online over the next few months. Here’s the first one: Octopus…
You can hear another version of this on A Glorious Monster.
Video: duo with Rachel Musson at Arch 1

Duo set with Benedict Taylor at Arch 1
A quick post to report that I had a very nice time playing duo with Benedict Taylor at Arch 1 last week. It was all live streamed (!) and is now online:
Our next duo date is at Flim Flam on 25th July, so join us then for more bari/viola improv.
Crowdfunder for the Favourite Animals large ensemble album
I’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo today for the upcoming Favourite Animals album. It will run until 4th October. From the campaign text:
This August I gathered my ten piece ensemble Favourite Animals to record a studio album at City, University of London. Thanks to our trombone player Tullis Rennie who lectures there, we had access to the world class facilities over three days. With Alex Bonney engineering, we recorded loads of music. Now I need YOUR help to get it out there! I’m fundraising to cover the musicians and engineers’ fees, mixing, mastering and CD production, ready for release this December when the band goes on tour.
You can check out the video below and support the campaign here. Help me make it happen!
New video: Sloth Racket in Brighton
Much more about the Sloth Racket Shapeshifters tour coming soon, but for starters here’s a lovely new video by Agata Urbaniak, taken at the Brighton gig at Safehouse…

New Sloth Racket video
Sloth Racket has a new video! Our good friend Ben Owen has made this great short film of us playing at a LUME gig at The Vortex in May this year. The piece we play is called ‘Shapeshifters’ and will appear on our second album, coming out in Summer 2017.
More videos of the band can be found on the Sloth Racket page. Also this month, some new nice words about the band have appeared online; from Dave Sumner on his latest Bird Is The Worm ‘This Is Jazz Today’ dispatch, and from Stewart Smith in his 2016 jazz/improv roundup on The Quietus. Thanks both!
First incarnation of the LUMEkestra
Anton Hunter has posted a video of the LUMEkestra playing his composition ‘LUME Kestrel’. The gig was at IKLECTIK or 14th November, as part of our special LUME triple bill show for the London Jazz Festival. As well as Anton’s piece we played compositions by Paulo Duarte, Tom Ward, Martin Pyne and Dave Kane. It was a lot of fun, and the ensemble will definitely appear again in 2017: its mission is to create a space for the composers around LUME to experiment with writing for large groups.
I was quite pleased with my flyer for this gig too:
Video: Cubitt Arts Picnic
A lovely video by Ben Owen has appeared, of the Cubitt Gallery‘s 2016 Arts Picnic on Islington Green. I played a set of quartet free improvisation with Tom Ward, Olie Brice and Andrew Lisle while all sorts of painting and dancing was going on. It was a lot of fun!
