Out today: trio recording on oem

Martin Clarke’s label oem Records has released a set by Dee Byrne, Craig Scott and me today, recorded a BRåKFest in February this year. It was the first time the trio had played together – and so far, the only time, as that gig turned out to be one of the last ones before the coronavirus lockdown struck. It was an enjoyable combination though, and one we hope to repeat! Check out the album on the oem Bandcamp site:

Duo set with Johnny Hunter up on the live recordings site

A new set is now up on the site! Duo with Johnny Hunter from BRÅK last November. Possibly our first duo set? Hopefully not the last anyway. It’s available as a name your price download, with the income split between Johnny and me as per usual. Check it out:

Johnny has also made an extract available in video form:

Duo set with Andrew Cheetham up on the live recordings site

The next installment of my gig recordings Bandcamp site is up: a duo with Andrew Cheetham from last year at BRÅK. I think it was the first time we’d played together! Dirk Serries recorded, mixed and mastered this one.

Duo with Rachel Musson up on the live recordings site!

I’ve just published something new on the live recordings Bandcamp site: a duo with Rachel Musson! We’ve done a couple of gigs together and I love playing with Rachel. This was possibly our first one, in the beer shop in 2018. Hope you enjoy it…

BRÅK Festival of Improvised Music

Happening in a couple of weeks’ time is the inaugural BRÅK Festival of Improvised Music, a.k.a BRÅKFest! We’re taking a trip outside of our normal beer shop setting and pitching up at Hundred Years Gallery for an all-dayer packed full of exciting improvisers. There are two sessions, afternoon and evening, with tickets on sale for both the whole day and each session separately. Head to the Musicglue tickets page to buy yours.

In a tip of the hat to our usual BRÅK format at waterintobeer Colin, Tom and I each booked a group to play as well as organising a lineup to play in ourselves. I invited Sam Andreae, Hannah Marshall and Alison Blunt for my guest group, and my own set will be with Dee Byrne and Craig Scott; a first time meeting! I’m looking forward to finding out what happens when the three of us play together.

See the poster below for full info on the festival. I’m really into the fact that it’s happening on a LEAP DAY, 29th February, so come and join us for a once-in-four-years experience…

LUME back on the Barbican freestage

This Sunday 23rd November sees the return of LUME to the Barbican Centre! As part of London Jazz Festival 2019 we’re presenting two trio sets starting at 5pm:

Rachel Musson, Andrew Lisle and Cath Roberts: the second outing of our new double-sax trio.

Deemer + 1: Dee Byrne’s long-running duo with sound artist Merijn Royaards is joined by special guest Johnny Hunter.

It will be great to play there again: we had such a great day doing the LUME Freestage in 2015 (which you can read about in the archives).  Join us in the foyer for some fresh improvised music!

Afterwards I’ll be heading straight down to Brockley for the November BRÅK, where I’m playing duo with Johnny Hunter. The full lineup is on our website…why not round off your day with some beer shop-based improv?

BRÅK Spring 2019 season

We’ve got a great selection of guest artists coming through for the next season of BRÅK at waterintobeer. I’ll be playing with Anton Hunter (for our first Ripsaw Catfish gig of the year), Lara Jones and Andrew Cheetham. Flyer below with all the dates and info.

In BRÅK-related news, Taran Singh published a really lovely interview with Colin, Tom and me about the night, which you can read on the Taran’s Free Jazz Hour site.

BRÅK Season Three! And photos…

The excellent waterintobeer have invited us back for a third series of BRÅK improv gigs in the shop. I’m looking forward to playing duos with Dee Byrne, Rachel Musson and Alex Ward this time around, and Colin and Tom also have a great selection of guests lined up. Join us in Brockley for more evenings of beer and music…In other BRÅK news, I’ve just seen some great photos by Arek Golosz taken at our September and October gigs last year. You can check out the full selection on the gallery page of our new BRÅK website, but here are a couple of my sets with Tullis Rennie and Kim Macari:
